Nagano, Japan

Around two hours from the capital, is famous for its skiing, with everything from small ski fields aimed at families to huge multi-mountain complexes to enjoy. There’s also great food, plenty of sake, and the notorious Jigokudani Monkey Park, where hundreds of snow monkeys soak their skin red in steaming hot springs.

Just 80 minutes by bullet train from Tokyo. The 12 resorts in Yuzawa are nice and close together, meaning you can sample a decent handful in a single trip. The town is also charming, with hot springs, a sake museum (complete with a hot sake bath), and market stalls selling Japanese snacks of all variety.
